Community Governors

Mr John Love O.B.E.  Community Governor

Throughout the 49 years that I and my wife (the Revd. Pamela Love, Assistant Curate for the Usk Ministry Area) have lived in Llangybi we have both always tried to play an active role in service for our community. Before retirement in 1998 I had been Headteacher of Duffryn High School Newport in the 1980s; and then Head of Education-Business Links in the Welsh Office, with responsibility for a range of programmes across Wales bringing employers and school children together in learning partnerships, work for which I received the O.B.E. in 1998. I have been a Community Councillor for Llangybi Fawr since 1999, also serving as its chairman until 2013 before handing that role to another council member. I am also a regular worshipper at St Cybi’s Church Llangybi, where I have over the years been both Treasurer and Church warden and am a member of the Parochial Church Council; and I have been the organist for over 35 years.

Our three children, now all in their 40s and 50s, went to the Llangybi Voluntary Controlled church primary school before its closure in the early 1980s, and our interest in and concern for the work and ethos of Church in Wales primary education continues in our links with Usk, where all of the primary-age children from our area are pupils. I believe it is important in the continuing mission of our rural churches for their community’s younger members that I am able as a Community Governor to forge closer links with the school’s pupils and staff, supporting and being informed by their work in whatever way I can.

My previous long experience as a secondary school senior manager, who worked hard to ensure good relationships with the feeder primary schools, helps me to appreciate the importance of effective learning experiences as children progress through primary into secondary school; whilst my former work as a WJEC Chief Examiner and as a Welsh Government Education-Business Adviser gives me a sound understanding of assessment processes and the value of engaging employers in the learning experiences of young children, whatever their age. I hope I can prove to be a valuable member of the School’s Governing body as a Community Governor.
