How You Can Support Your Child At Home

Mathematics - 

Expectations for times tables and other known facts for each year group:

Reception

  • Recite numbers up to 20, forwards and backwards, and from different starting points
  • Count in 2s to 10 and 10s to 100

Year 1

  • Recite numbers up to 100, forwards and backwards and from different starting points
  • Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10
  • Recall and use all doubles to 10 and corresponding halves  

Year 2

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10  multiplication tables
  • Recall and use all doubles to 20 and corresponding halves  

Year 3

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 multiplication tables  
  • Recall and use all doubles to 50 and corresponding halves  
  • Recall near doubles within 20

Year 4

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10  multiplication tables  
  • Recall and use all doubles to 50

Year 5

  • Recall all times tables and division facts up to 10x10 and derive sequences that are ten/hundred times bigger/smaller
  • Recall and use all doubles to 50 and corresponding halves  

Year 6

  • Recall all times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and derive sequences that are ten/hundred times bigger/smaller
  • Recall and use all near doubles to 50
  • Recall and use all doubles  to 100 and corresponding halves  

 

Handwriting

At Usk we follow the PenPals handwriting scheme.

The key thing to remember is that all letters start from the top (apart from d and e), and joining is introduced in Year 1 once children are ready.

As a school, we expect children to use a clear, neat joined script in their everyday writing.

Children from Year 3 will use black ink pens in school and we recommend Berol & Manuscript Handwriting pens or other ink flowing / fibre tip pen. 

We do not teach ‘cursive’ (joining from the line).

Spelling

How Big Spelling Works

In Big Spelling there are 10 or 15 words for each child to learn on a weekly basis, although teachers may adapt the word lists to suit individual needs.

 

First of all, each child will be assessed to work out which list they need. The lists start at A, which is very simple, progressing as far as list R where there are lots of very challenging words to learn.

 

Every day the children will use a spelling strategy to learn the words from their allocated list, the list may also include 1 or 2 personal spellings. Within classrooms there will be access to sand trays to trace the letters, magnetic letters and tiles etc for those children to use who need a more multisensory approach to learning spelling. Spelling lists will also be set up within Spelling Shed.  

 

If within a week children secure get 9 or 10 out of 10, or 14 or 15 out of 15, they will move on to the next set of spellings on the sheet which they will work on next week. They will highlight all the ones they got right on their spelling list sheet. If they make one mistake they can still move on but they will be checked on this word the following Friday. If they get 8 or less out of 10 or 13 or less out of 15 they will not move on to the next set of spellings and have to keep practising these to be rechecked on them the next week.
