Distance Learning - Week Commencing: Monday 8th February 2021

During the week commencing Monday 8th February we’re going to break from the routine of distance learning, just as we would always do in school in the week before the February half term to prepare for our annual Eisteddfod on March 1st.

There isn’t going to be any judging this year. It’s all about taking part. Each entry will receive a house point and the house with the most entries will be the winners of the 2021 Eisteddfod.

You will find below 10 Eisteddfod categories that are open to all children and one just for Years 5 and 6.

During the week , please try to encourage your child to enter a few different categories. We certainly are not expecting you to do them all. We’ve set up quite a few to appeal to different children and give everybody a chance to share their skills and talents beyond the day-to-day areas of the curriculum that have been incorporated into distance learning recently. We get to see the whole child through our broad curriculum when we are in school and hope that what is planned for next week will add that variety back in.

The whole teaching team has collaborated to introduce the categories for this year’s Eisteddfod. Links to their introductory videos and and any resources you may need can be found below and don’t forget it’s all about the taking part. Maybe in the comfort of their own home your child may feel more confident to try out something they would never normally do in school. Each entry can be an by an individual child, siblings or even from the whole family, you may all wish to get involved – the choice is up to you.

The Year 6 creative writing competition usually leads to the Chairing of the Bard. The entries at this time will not lead to a winning bard as we want everybody on a level playing field for that, so, there will be another opportunity to chair an Usk Primary Bard for 2021 when we return to school.

We suggest you make use of the usual learning platforms during the week to supplement the Eisteddfod categories,  EG – Big Maths, Spelling Shed, Read Write Inc. , Times Table Rockstars Teachers will share information about this through their daily Dojo messages. Daily physical activity is also an essential ingredient for each day and it is important that children continue to practise reading as this skill is important for our children's whole education and later life.

All Teams meetings scheduled for Monday – Thursday will take place at the normal times with the exception of Celebration Assemblies as Teachers will not be online during Friday 12th February 2021 as this is an INSET day for all staff. A reminder to those who attend our school hub that this will also be closed to pupils on our INSET day.

We will accept entries up till Friday 19th February 2021 although teachers will not give feedback on entries or respond to messages during the half term holiday.

Distance Learning - Monday 4th & Tuesday 5th January 2021

Please find below information on our school’s approach to distance learning for Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th January 2021.

  • Teachers will send a daily ClassDojo message by 9am each morning outlining the suggested schedule of activities for the day, a description of the tasks, and links to any resources that are required.
  • Teachers will provide 2 pre-recorded video lessons and an independent activity each day.
  • Face to face time with Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be provided through a Microsoft Teams meeting on Monday afternoon. This will be a wellbeing session in groups. Staff will communicate the time for each group’s meet on the morning of Monday 4th January. Video guides on how to access Microsoft Teams can be found on our school website - How To Guides | Usk C.V. Primary School (
  • If not completing a task electronically, the children should use the exercise book they were provided with at the start of the year to complete their distance learning in.
  • We expect all children to share at least one activity from the day with their teacher for feedback. Children in Foundation Phase are to upload this to Dojo. In Key Stage 2 the work can be shared via Dojo, Google Classroom or shared with teachers via email through Hwb.
  • Teachers will be available on ClassDojo if you need any help when the term begins on January 4th.

I need to caveat the above with the reminder that arrangements may change if government guidelines are updated or if our staffing is compromised. I will contact you as soon as possible should this be the case and update you with the way forward.
